Nothing better exemplifies Beacon Paint & Hardware’s charitable side than the annual nighttime walkathon it sponsors.
The beneficiary of the walkathon is Guiding Eyes for the Blind, a non-profit foundation that provides guide dogs and training for blind people. They do this at no cost to the recipient, and receive no government funding. They rely solely on donations. It costs $45,000 to raise and train just one guide dog.
Beacon knows Guiding Eyes quite well. Marcia Stark, sister of Beacon’s owners, received two guide dogs from GEB. Marcia died in 1978 at age 27 from skin cancer.
The walkathon is sponsored entirely by Beacon. The walkathon takes place in the playground at the corner of Columbus Avenue and West 77th Street.
We invite you and your family to join us. We are looking for as many people as can get to make this year’s walkathon special. Many people from the local schools will be there, including teachers and families. Children who attend receive a gift. At the end of the walkathon, all children receive a framed certificate with their name on it. There will be food and drinks, including items for those who need are diabetic or need gluten-free food.
Of course, moral support alone cannot sustain a cause as worthy as GEB, so we must ask for financial assistance as well. A sponsor sheet can be printed out for you and your children. Just contact us to request a copy.
Corporate sponsors are welcome and needed. You are also welcome to help us fill “goodie bags” with any promotional items you like.
Please make your checks payable to: Guiding Eyes for the Blind. You can send your check to Beacon Paint & Hardware, or bring them to the walkathon.
